This 1.5-hour podcast will explore the latest research in the exercise oncology area and provide an update on the evidence base regarding the role of exercise in counteracting treatment related side effects of cancer. Content will include the role of exercise in counteracting muscle atrophy, accelerated loss of bone mineral density, declines in functional ability, cancer related fatigue, psychological distress and sexual dysfunction with the focus on men with prostate cancer. Research involving advanced cancers and cancers with poor prognoses will also be touched on. The podcast also includes a discussion of translating the research into practice. Dr Prue Cormie is a Senior Research Fellow at the Exercise Medicine Research Institute in Perth, Western Australia. She currently holds a competitively funded research fellowship from the Cancer Council of Western Australia and is a previous recipient of the Exercise and Sports Science Australia Medal. Dr Cormie is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist whose research and clinical work focuses on the role of exercise in the management of cancer. She is an accomplished early career researcher with a track record including over 40 publications, 80 conference proceedings and $2.2 million in research grant funding. At the Exercise Medicine Research Institute Dr Cormie and the team conduct innovative research examining the efficacy of exercise in counteracting significant adverse treatment-related effects of cancer that is leading to changes in clinical oncology practice.
